ABSTRACT
The courts hold a unique position among
democratic institutions. In a sense, they represent one of our last bastions of
participatory democracy in which disputants go directly before a judge or jury
to resolve an issue. In no other governmental connect does an individual have
the opportunity to take a problem to a decision maker who represents the full
force and power of that particular branch of government but in the case of
Nigeria, the
image of the judiciary in Nigeria today is that of an institution where anything
goes, as a lot of people have been perverting justice, especially civil and
political cases. This study examined the role of the judiciary in promoting democracy
in Nigeria. Hence the general objective of the study was to examine the roles judiciary
play in democracy consolidation in Nigeria. This paper explores the Nigerian
judicial system, their role in electoral process and ways it can be addressed.
