EMEKA OJUKWU NATIONHOOD & NNAMDI KANU'S IDEALISM; THE BIAFRA STORY
ABSTRACT
The then Eastern region of Nigeria seceded from the
Federation and took on the name Biafra (from the Bight of Biafra now Bight of
Benin) as an independent and sovereign nation on 30 May 1967 after failed
attempts by the Nigerian government to address the grievances expressed by
southeastern Nigerians. The initiator and Governor of then eastern region of
Nigeria, Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu led the struggle until three years. Since then
the Ibo nation seems to be marginalized in the affairs of the nation state, Nigeria;
this tipped off another struggle by Nnamdi Kanu under the umbrella of IPOB to
further continue the struggle. On this premise, this paper seeks to expatiate
on the idealism of the two agitators for the sovereign State of Biafra; their
early life and struggle, their idealism for the agitation and summarizes the
outcome for the struggles.
